Budapest Landmarks

Parliament

Our Neo-Gothic parliament is one of the oldest legislative buildings of Europe. It was built over a period of 17 years, and entails gothic, baroque, and renaissance elements. It was considered the largest investment in its time, and was constructed and assembled using only Hungarian materials, techniques and architects. The Buda Castle, as well as many spots in Buda offer a complete and perfect view of the Parliament.

Castle Hill

It is an idyllic location for breathtaking and romantic sites, as well as the Royal Palace, The National Gallery, The Széchényi Library, Matthias Church, and Fisherman’s Bastion within footsteps reach. The Royal Castle, and its magnificent walls were constructed for defence against Tartar attacks in the 11th century, and became the largest Gothic structure in the Late Middle Ages. Due to countless aggressions, it had to be rebuilt many times throughout history.

Matthias Church

The 700 year old monument is one of the most important symbols of our country, and is named after one of our most celebrated Kings. Built in the 11th century, it became the scene of Royal weddings and coronations. Its initial structure was Gothic, but due to many reconstructions in the 19th and 20th century, it became Neo-Gothic in style.

Fisherman’s Bastion

A wonderful site for exquisite Hungarian cuisine, wine-tasting and sightseeing, it allows a panoramic view of the entire city. Its history stretches back to 1895, when its construction was begun along the territory of the 18th century castle walls. Fisherman’s Bastion, unlike the Royal Castle, was not built for the purpose of defence, but to serve as a symbol for the leaders of the settlement.

Andrássy Avenue

It is the perfect spot for wining, dinning, and shopping. Since 2002, it has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its construction took over 10 years to be completed, and stretches 2.3 kilometres in length. Andrássy Avenue boasts one of the widest selections of luxury stores and big brand names in Budapest such as Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein, as well as many historical sites such as the Opera House, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the Millenium Underground.

Heroe’s Square

It is one of the most important historical landmarks of our city, including the Millenary Monument and the Tomb of the unknown soldier, situated in between the Museum of Fine Arts and Palace of Arts, and behind the City park. It neighbours the Széchényi Baths, the National Amusement Park, and the National Zoo, and it is clearly visible from Andrássy Avenue. Many political, cultural, and recreational activities take place here.

Széchényi Baths

Known as the largest medicinal bath in the world, and one of the largest bathing complexes in Europe, it is a definite pull factor when it comes to tourists and visitors from outside Budapest. The Széchényi Baths were completed in the 1920’s, and have been under continuous revise and reconstruction since. It offers a variety of recreational facilities besides bathing, such as massages, jacuzzis, steam rooms, and restaurants.

Margaret Island

The 2.5 km stretch of land has become recognized as leisure heaven, as well as party central spot for the weekends. During the day, it is perfect for long walks, picnics, and relaxing with a drink. By night time, the island comes to life with hundreds of visitors, who come together to party at one of the many clubs and bars, or sit outside the shore to take in the view of the Danube, the Parliament, Castle Hill, and many of the amazing bridges.

Hajógyári Island

Like Margaret Island, it is famous for its sporting activities and recreational facilities. Its name (hajógyár means dockyard) refers to its initial function, which has now become obsolete. Nowadays it serves as a central spot for relaxation and partying, annually hosting the Sziget festival, and an array of clubs such as Mokka Cukka (drum and bass), Bed Beach, Dokkoló, Studio (for dance, house, and trance music), and Coronita (from 5 am onwards for the afterparty).
